Et nous voici, déchirés
Y aquí estamos hechos pedazos
And here we are torn to pieces
For several years I have been working on the theme of migrants who have crossed the Darien Gap.
I visited the region in 2023, the year more than 500,000 people traversed this jungle.
In 2024 I presented SELVA at the Venice Biennale.
I went back to Darien in April 2025. The work I am presenting at La Maison marks the culmination of this research. Since the arrival of the new president of Panama and Trump's return to the United States, the flow of migrants has practically ceased. For me, seeing, listening to, and thinking about all these people capable of leaving everything they love in search of their “El Dorado” is remarkable. Knowing that this distant future no longer exists is wrenching. Where is our world headed?
